About the session

The academic book is often considered to have been slow to evolve, and its continuing relevance has been questioned by some. Despite this, academic book publishing continues to grow. During the pandemic, their relevance was strengthened, with many publishers and librarians reacting to the sudden demand for remote learning by facilitating online access and on-demand book services. And there are many new approaches to book publishing that are opening up new business models and formats that respect the long tradition of books. New approaches to usage data and metadata are empowering a new generation of data-driven commissioning. Bespoke collections, personalized content, and hybrid book-journal models have emerged, leveraging community expertise and novel technologies to revolutionalize our oldest publishing format. In this panel, we hope to shed light on these new trends in book content and explore how data is driving the development of custom products and influencing traditional book commissioning. || Speakers: Katherine Christian; Katie Silvester; Megan Hilands

Speakers

  • Senior Product Analyst, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC

Megan Hilands works in the Taylor & Francis product management team, with a focus on areas such as ebook and digital platform development, books open access, and author services. Megan has 10 years’ experience in academic publishing in roles across editorial and product. She is especially interested in the variety of opportunities brought about by emerging publishing technology—not only how it can enhance the experiences of academics, but also its ability to bring new life to traditional research outputs like the monograph. Megan holds degrees from Gettysburg College and New York University.
  • Product Manager, Cambridge Elements, Cambridge University Press

Katie Silvester is part of the Digital Publishing Team at Cambridge University Press. She is the Product Manager of a number of print and digital resources including Cambridge Elements – a programme of peer-reviewed hybrid publications for academics who want a vehicle for research that is longer than a journal article, but shorter than a monograph. She has also worked for the Press’s Scholarly Communications Research and Development Team. Prior to joining the Press, she project-managed books and digital resources for publishers including UCL Press, Pearson, the Open University and Folens.
  • CEO, Altmetric

Kathy is the Altmetric CEO and Digital Science Chief People Officer. She has been with Altmetric since 2014 but originally joined as the COO, working closely with Altmetric Founder and CEO Euan Adie. In 2017, Euan decided to step down from the role of CEO and promoted Kathy in his place. Prior to Digital Science and Altmetric, Kathy worked at Elsevier for 6 years and before that, she spent over 9 years in drug development, primarily with J&J. Kathy has an MBA from London Business School (but don't hold that against her).
